This is a letter about our beloved dog Sirius so please don’t feel you have to read it to get literary news. If you are still here, I wanted to share the news that he died suddenly yesterday morning. I know that many of our readers enjoyed seeing pictures of Sirius - and that many of you even met him - so thought perhaps you might like to share some memories. I don’t want to burden you with the sorrow we’re feeling - rather, I want to celebrate this wonderful fellow and let you know what an important and instrumental part of our set up he was. I want to share some of the fun and joy he has brought to the little house that is also Galley Beggar headquarters. So. Here are just a few of the things that Sirius did for us: He met - and enthusiastically greeted - nearly all of our authors. When they came to work on editorial, do signings, he was there at the door, wagging them in, exuding excitement at their presence. I am sure that authors who were nervous about meeting their publisher and worried about what kind of characters we might be were not only put at ease by his presence - but also reassured. If we lived with such a lovely, gentle soul, surely we must have something going for us too? He came with us on hundreds of walks to the local post box for franked mail. He sometimes made those walks slightly more difficult, causing me to drop the bag from my shoulder as he yanked on the lead to investigate interesting smells - but he always made them more pleasurable. He also got in amongst the post when it was being sorted and packaged.
