Classic Stories No. 6:
MIRANDA JULY, ‘The swim team’
AS WE ENTER THE FINAL TWO WEEKS OF THE GBP Short Story Prize 2018/19, we’ll be posting recommendations from our judges of short stories (both classic and contemporary) for readers and entrants to access freely.
Today, here is Miranda July’s ‘The swim team’, chosen by GBP Short Story Prize judge Philip Langeskov. Philip writes: ‘Among the many categories of story I admire, I particularly venerate the story of crisp clean lines, that seems so smooth and elegant, like the surface of a boat, the water glittering brightly at its side. Just when you think you've figured it all out - it's a boat! it goes on the water! - it turns out to not be a boat at all; or, if it is a boat, it isn't doing what boats are supposed to do. This is that kind of story.’
