Classic Stories No. 4:
CARMEN MARIA MACHADO, ‘The husband stitch’
AS WE ENTER THE FINAL TWO WEEKS OF THE GBP Short Story Prize 2018/19, we’ll be posting recommendations from our judges of short stories (both classic and contemporary) for readers to access freely.
Today, here is Carmen Maria Machado’s ‘The husband stitch’, chosen by GBP Short Story Prize judge Jonathan Gibbs. Jonathan writes: ‘This is the opening story of one of the best collections I've read in recent months. There are shades of Angela Carter. I was going to say it's Carter updated for contemporary feminism, but I don't suppose Carter really needs updating. In any event, it's fierce, full-pelt, take-no-prisoners writing. This story makes me look over my shoulder.’
