Classic Stories No. 4:
SAADAT HASAN MANTO, ‘Ten Rupees’
ONCE A WEEK, and while submissions are open for the GBP Short Story Prize 2017/18, we'll be posting a short story for our friends and entrants to access freely.
Fourth is Saadat Hasan Manto’s ‘Ten Rupees’, chosen by GBP Short Story Prize judge Preti Taneja. Of this choice, Preti writes:
“Although Manto’s classic and more famous stories ‘Khol Do’ and ‘Tobak Tek Singh’ were strong contenders for my choice, ‘Ten Rupees’ is a personal favourite of mine. Via a female central character, Manto displays his fierce understanding of freedom – and how the expression of it can’t be controlled by economics or by social hierarchies of gender and caste.”
‘Ten Rupees’ is freely available to read via Google Books – and in what Preti calls an “expertly sparse translation by Taseer” – here.
