Classic Stories No. 5:
MARGARET ATWOOD, ‘Happy Endings’
ONCE A WEEK, and while submissions are open for the GBP Short Story Prize 2017/18, we'll be posting a short story for our friends and entrants to access freely.
Fifth is Margaret Atwood’s ‘Happy Endings’, chosen by GBP Short Story Prize judge Natasha Onwuemezi. Of this choice, Natasha writes:
“‘Happy Endings’ is very conscious dissection of story and the forms it can take. It’s challenging, cutting, provocative, and while it seems to demonstrate the futility of story (‘Shit happens, then you die’) it shows with inventiveness and skill the endless possibilities inherent in the form.”
‘Happy Endings’ is freely available to read here.
You can also read an excellent interview with Atwood (focusing on her writing) in The Paris Review.
